Limnologists have used the black and white Secchi disk for years to gauge turbidity in lakes and ponds. This clever adaptation is a useful tool for helping students to visualize and measure turbidity in any type of water. Fill the glass tube with sample water, and then peer down at a miniature Secchi disk in the bottom of the tube while gradually releasing water through a small plug. Marks on the side of the tube indicate depth (cm) and allow for comparison of results. Turbidity couldn't be any clearer!
