Back to School: Teach Proper Handwashing and Fight Germs with Project WET Resources

Back to School: Teach Proper Handwashing and Fight Germs with Project WET Resources

As the new school year begins, it’s important to equip students with the tools they need to stay healthy and safe, especially when it comes to fighting germs. With the return to classrooms, preventing the spread of illnesses like colds, the flu, and even COVID-19 is a top priority. One of the most effective ways to combat these threats is by instilling proper handwashing habits in children. Fortunately, Project WET offers a range of free resources that can help educators teach students how to wash their hands effectively.

Why Handwashing Matters

Handwashing with soap and water is one of the simplest yet most effective ways to prevent the spread of germs and illnesses. By teaching students the importance of hand hygiene, we can reduce the transmission of viruses and bacteria that cause illness, creating a healthier learning environment for everyone.

Project WET’s “Soap and Water Science” Resource

Introduce your students to the science behind handwashing with Project WET’s Soap and Water Science unit. This interactive resource explains not only how to wash hands properly but also why it’s essential. Students will learn how soap and water work together to eliminate germs they encounter in their daily lives. This unit is available in English and Chinese, making it accessible for diverse classrooms.

Online Training and Resources for Educators

For educators looking to incorporate handwashing lessons into their curriculum, Project WET offers an online training module on "Healthy Personal Hygiene." This training provides step-by-step guidance on teaching students about the importance of hygiene, including handwashing. After completing the training, educators can download the lesson plan and supplementary materials to use with students ranging from ages 3 to 18. Remember, these resources are available in several languages, including Chinese, German, Spanish, Portuguese, and French, ensuring that all students can benefit from these crucial lessons.

Handwashing Posters to Reinforce the Message

Visual reminders can be powerful tools in reinforcing handwashing habits. Project WET offers a variety of downloadable handwashing posters in different designs and languages. These posters can be printed and displayed in classrooms, bathrooms, and common areas to remind students of when and how to wash their hands properly. Some popular posters include:
  • “Wash Those Germs Away”
  • “When Should You Wash Your Hands?” (Spanish poster)

In addition to posters for children, there are also adult-oriented designs available, perfect for staff lounges and offices.

Additional Tips for Keeping Classrooms Germ-Free

Aside from teaching proper handwashing, here are some additional tips recommended by the CDC to keep your classroom as germ-free as possible:
  • Encourage students to avoid close contact with anyone who is sick.
  • Remind them not to touch their eyes, nose, or mouth, especially with unwashed hands.
  • Advise students to stay home if they feel unwell.
  • Teach them to cover their coughs or sneezes with a tissue and to dispose of the tissue immediately.
  • Regularly clean and disinfect commonly touched surfaces in the classroom.
By prioritizing hygiene and using Project WET’s resources, educators can create a safer, healthier learning environment as students head back to school this year. Stay healthy and help others do the same with Project WET!
